Storytime with Mom: The Chronicles of Narnia

Since the middle of summer, I’ve been reading The Chronicles of Narnia to the boys, one chapter per night, give or take a few. My mother bought us the complete set in one book a couple of years back and I thought it would be nice to read each of them aloud so we could all get the full story. We are fans of the movies, so it only made sense.

Over the weekend we finished the first volume, The Magician’s Nephew, which takes readers back to the creation of Narnia and how the infamous wardrobe came to be. More than anyone Jeremy has enjoyed hearing the stories of Narnia that aren’t told in the movies. I, on the other hand, am not as impressed with the actual writing as I’d hoped. It’s pure snobbery, I realize, but J.K. Rowling has C.S. Lewis beat when it comes to sentence structure, fluidity and the ability to seamlessly tell a story.

Regardless, we’re having fun with it. Just tonight we reached the second chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, when Lucy meets Mr. Tumnus by the lamppost.

Jackson seems to enjoy listening to the story, though he’s often too fidgety and needs to browse through a secondary book while I read. It’s no matter to me, as I’m doing this for myself as much as I am the boys. And if this goes well then I do believe we’ll begin The Sorcerer’s Stone afterward.
