Salt Dough

I remember making things out of salt dough when I was in elementary school, so I was excited (read: full of nostalgia) to make something with the boys. Since we’ve been learning about landforms, it seemed like the right time to pull out the recipe.

Salt Dough
4 cups flour
2 cups salt
2 cups water
2 tsp. cream of tartar

Mix well and start sculpting!

After carving a not-to-scale shape of Tennessee, the boys and I added mountains, rivers, and a plateau. Then we let the sculpture dry out overnight.

We painted Tennessee the next morning and I created labels for all of the things we wanted to identify, including major cities and bordering states.

In an alternate universe Chuck would’ve been a cartographer, so he sat down with the boys that afternoon to label everything.

It kinda looks like a carrot.

Now the boys want to sculpt the entire United States, and I can’t think of a reason not to.
