When we bought this foreclosure, we knew renovating the kitchen would be years away. It’s a $20,000 project, if not more. The floors are horrible, the cabinets are basic, and it’s just… blah. But most everything works, so until the room falls apart, we’re putting our attention elsewhere.
However, we decided to give the kitchen a mini-makeover by painting the builder-grade cabinets. The results are beautiful.
Ignore the linoleum. We hate it.
A word about these photos: Any sort of disarray makes me anxious, so showing you this mess feels like I’m laying it a little too bare. I know we all have junk crammed in our cabinets, but I totally wish I could present you with perfectly stacked dishes and pretty food packages. Oh well. T’is life.
The color we chose is Grasshopper Wings from Behr. (The blue went in the boys bathroom and the brown went on the front door.)
Ack! Look at all this junk! Instead of sanding the cabinets with sandpaper, we used a chemical that strips the wood of its sheen. It was so much more efficient than we anticipated. (Ten points if you find the cat in this photo.)
After they were stripped, Chuck took off the doors and primed them in the garage, while I primed the frames. (The cat hasn’t moved.)
Two coats of primer later, we started painting with Grasshopper Wings.
The door pulls are basic, but we splurged on fancy drawer handles.
They reminded me of a card catalogue.
So we love the cabinets! I know green isn’t everyone’s first choice, but it’s drowned out the boring brown we’ve been staring at for two years. Until we can give the kitchen a proper overhaul, this facelift will work nicely.
