Brag Time

In the first week of school, Jeremy aced his first two math tests on multiplication. This is huge because Jeremy is the child who needs LOTS of affirmation. He needs to know he’s doing well in order to continue to do well. As I graded his first test, he covered his eyes because he was so nervous, and when I told him every problem was correct, he erupted with excitement. Then when he got a one hundred on his second test on Friday, he ran circles around the living room. Oh, the thrill of achievement is a big deal in this house!

Jackson, too, is doing very well. My first grader is working on second grade level reading comprehension and breezing through first grade math (Alpha book in Math-U-See). Plus, his handwriting is fantastically better than it was this time last year. And while his comprehension level is still very simple, we’re managing to find ways to connect the dots.

For example, in talking about some of our basic freedoms as a U.S. citizen, I brought in a little Marvel to help the lesson along.

“Okay, tell me some of the freedoms we have here,” I ask the boys.

“Freedom of Speech,” says Jeremy. “Freedom of the Press.”

“Okay, yes. What about you, Jackson?” I ask.

“Um… Freedom of…,” he pauses.

“What if I say, ‘Avengers Assemble!” I look at him with anticipation.

“Freedom of Assembly!” he yells.

And finally, look how dang cute their feet are? They laughed and giggled while I took this photograph and asked me why in the world was I taking a picture of their feet.

To which I replied, “Because one day very soon I won’t want to be this close to them anymore.”
